Fabulous Flooring

We’ve recently completed a stunning French Provincial house in the leafy suburb of Ivanhoe East that makes extensive use of English Oak parquetry flooring in a double herringbone pattern.

The French were the first to use parquetry flooring over 330 years ago as a replacement for marble. Parquetry flooring is different to floorboards in that each small piece of timber is laid in a decorative pattern, enhancing the inherent natural beauty of the wood grain.

Parquetry flooring can be used in heavy traffic areas such as entrances, hallways and steps. It can also be used as a feature floor covering to create a sense style and elegance.

There are many classic historical patterns you can lay, for example Chantilly, Chantreuse and Monticello. Or you can go with one of the more contemporary patterns that are popular today, e.g. herringbone, hexagon, basket weave, chevron, block or brick bond. You can also use a mix timber species to add contrast in colour, or custom stain your floor for a unique look.

Benefits of parquetry flooring
  • Easy to clean and keep clean
  • Dust mites cannot survive on timber floors, making parquetry flooring ideal for allergy sufferers
  • Timber has its own natural insulation properties against heat and cold
  • Environmentally friendly – timber naturally stores atmospheric carbon

Comdain Homes’ design team can help you select the timber that’s right for your home, where the floor is going to be laid and also the pattern. Some timbers are harder wearing than others, for example Ironbark is rated very hard, while Tasmanian Oak is rated moderate to hard, but you may prefer the lighter colour of Tasmanian Oak to the dark reddish brown of Ironbark.

No matter what design you select, a parquetry floor will add style and elegance to you custom built luxury home.
